There is no need for a matching donor or to purchase PRP stored in the refrigerator. If you have ever donated platelets or plasma, then you have seen most of the PRP production process.
First, a needle is inserted into your arm with a tube that runs to a centrifuge machine. This device draws blood from your arm and spins it inside the centrifuge. By spinning the blood at high speed, it separates into the four main components that we mentioned earlier. From there, we can siphon off only the parts that we want. In this case, we need plasma and platelets.
Since platelets make up less than 4% of your blood by volume, this process cycles several times. Each time, your red blood cells and other components are pushed back into your bloodstream through the same tube. This prevents you from losing valuable red blood cells and feeling tired or sluggish after the process.
This autologous method means that there is absolutely no risk to you during the treatment. Surgeries carry significant risks. PRP works by employing your body’s recovery mechanisms. Platelets play an important role in wound healing and recovery.
