What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets that can stimulate healing of soft tissue. PRP therapy is an injection treatment that uses a person’s own blood. A simple blood draw is performed and the blood is taken and spun in a special centrifuge to separate the components and leave only the remaining fluid or plasma rich with platelets.

PRP therapies are used in many healthcare specialties including:

Dermatology/Aesthetics: androgenic alopecia, plastic surgery, wound healing, facial rejuvenation
Orthopedics/Sports Medicine: nerve injury, chronic tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, osteoarthritis, cardiac muscle injury, bone repair and regeneration, sports injuries, musculoskeletal or nerve injuries, bone grafts
Dentistry: oral surgery

PRP Therapy for facial rejuvenation

The plasma in PRP stimulates the stem cells naturally, causing them to produce more collagen, which is what makes the skin appear more youthful. The plasma contains molecules and proteins that provide nutrients to the skin’s cells, making it a healthier, more natural way to improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars and other effects of aging. PRP is used for volumizing faces that are beginning to look drawn, to plump out cheek indentations, soften under eye hollows, improve the skin tone, tightness, and texture and fill in areas where fillers cannot reach or are not safe to use.

PRP based aesthetic treatments have received a tremendous amount media attention, often referred to as “PRP Microneedling.” PRP treatments are widely recognized for improving the appearance of wrinkles, scars, sun damage and dark circles under the eyes, which completely rejuvenates the face; resulting in firmer younger looking skin.

Clinical studies on PRP therapy for face and neck revitalization have shown satisfactory results with no serious or persistent side effects. Since PRP therapy is organic in nature and uses plasma taken from the patient’s own blood instead of chemicals injected into the body, side effects such as allergic reactions or infections are highly unlikely because the body is unlikely to reject its own blood.
PRP Therapy process: what to expect

The first step in a typical PRP therapy treatment involves drawing a blood sample. The sample is then placed into centrifuge to separate platelets (takes about 20 minutes) and PRP is collected into a sterile syringe.

The skin is then cleansed using an antiseptic agent and the skin is anesthetized with a local numbing gel.

Next, the PRP filled syringe is then injected into the troubled areas using a small needle. You may elect to have a PRP treatment with a dermapen. This creates micro-point punctures in the skin, the majority of which are simply pushing your pores open temporarily. The PRP is painted on over these areas allowing it to sink into the skin benefiting the entire face.

The entire process from blood draw to injection takes less than 45 minutes. Two treatment sessions spaced 8 weeks apart are recommended to achieve the best outcome. Some temporary swelling may occur.

How long do the benefits or PRP therapy last?

Since the plasma stimulates the skin’s stem cells to produce more collagen, grow new cells and literally rejuvenate the skin, many say their faces look even better several months after they have had the treatments. The effects can last as long as 18 months to two years.
