How Does IV Therapy Work?

At Priority You MD in Clearwater, FL, our IV therapy treatments are among our top-rated treatments for restoring and improving your health and well-being. If you’re looking to reclaim your health, our IV therapies may be the solution you’re looking for. We have a variety of infusion treatments available to target aging, athletic performance, weight loss, mood disorders, and more. Read on to learn more about our IV treatments.

How Does IV Therapy Work?

Intravenous therapy is a method of administering fluids, nutrients, minerals, and vitamins into the body via the bloodstream. They are the fastest, most effective way to deliver essential nutrients to your body. Our infusion services aim to improve your overall health and wellness. An IV fluid drip uses a small tube called a catheter to deliver a saline-based electrolyte solution containing your selected vitamins, minerals, and nutrients directly into your bloodstream. Because infusions bypass the digestive tract, you’ll experience increased absorption and acceleration of healing.

What Goes Into an IV Drip?

Typically, infusions will include a combination of saline, vitamins, antioxidants, and electrolytes. Saline (otherwise known as saltwater solution) is the most common type of fluid used in IV drips; it is excellent for addressing dehydration. Electrolytes (including bicarbonate, calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphate, and potassium) help hydrate the body, regulate blood pressure, regulate nerve and muscle function, and more. Vitamins and antioxidants can help to boost energy, strengthen the immune system, and more.

Although these are the most common ingredients, many other ingredients can be added to an infusion to target specific health conditions or goals.

What Does Treatment Look Like?

When you arrive for your IV treatment appointment, we will place a thin plastic tube into your vein (usually in an arm). This small tube is called a catheter and it will remain inserted for the duration of your infusion. Prior to inserting the catheter, we will use a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. Once the catheter has been successfully inserted, a bag containing your infusion fluids will be attached to administer your nutrients. In total, a typical infusion session will take between 20 to 45 minutes.

The process is safe and effective. Prior to your session, we will assess your health and ensure that your selected IV treatment is a good fit for your health goals. All of our IV infusions are FDA-approved, rigorously tested, and administered by a registered nurse. While it’s unlikely you’ll experience side effects from an infusion, on occasion, you may experience some mild discomfort in or around the injection site, including bruising, itching, inflammation, or redness. These side effects are temporary, harmless, and should clear up within a few days. Genuine allergic reactions to infusions are rare.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Our recommended IV treatment plan will look different for each client depending on your individual needs and health goals. Generally, we recommend receiving infusion treatments once or twice a month. For more preventative health measures, we recommend receiving two infusions per month. This will help to balance out any vitamin deficiencies you may have. Because we offer a wide variety of infusions to target many different health and wellness needs, you’ll be sure to find more than a couple of infusion therapies that are suitable for your specific health goals.

Types of IV Therapies

For our IV therapy treatments, we use a number of different ingredients to formulate our infusions to address the wellness needs of our clients. A variety of health benefits can be experienced from our many types of infusions, including balanced hormones, improved visual health, decreased inflammation, smoother skin, increased energy levels, improved immunity and more. Read on to discover what specific benefits each of our IV therapies can offer you.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) IV

Considered a universal antioxidant, alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a naturally-occurring fat- and water-soluble antioxidant. ALA is essential for cell metabolism and cellular energy production. It can help to protect brain and nerve tissue, help lower blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, eliminate free radicals from the body, and aid in the healing of nerve damage.

Glutathione IV

Glutathione is a powerful natural tri-peptide found in every cell in the body. Glutathione can bolster the immune system and help repair free radical damage in the body caused by aging, infections, stress, radiation, drug use, medications, and malnutrition. In clinical trials, glutathione infusions have been shown to reduce side effects from chemotherapy and increase overall survival rate for women suffering with ovarian cancer.

Hydrogen Peroxide IV

Hydrogen peroxide treatment is administered to release extra oxygen inside the body. By oxygenating the body this way, viruses, bacteria, yeast, and fungi can all be cleared out quickly and effectively. Hydrogen peroxide infusions can be an excellent complementary therapy to conventional treatments for chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

KetaMind™ (Ketamine Therapy)

KetaMind™ Ketamine Therapy is a medical therapy for treating psychiatric conditions, enhancing cognition, and supporting memory function using a low dose of ketamine administered slowly through. Ketamine therapy has shown to be safe and effective for treating anxiety, depression, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), fibromyalgia, Crohn’s disease, phantom limb, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), memory and cognitive issues, and mood disorders.

Myer’s Cocktail and Supercharged Myer’s Cocktail

The Myer’s Cocktail was developed by John Myer, MD, a well-known doctor from Boston and one of the pioneers of IV therapy. Most infusions you’ll find in a standard IV clinic are a variation on the original Myer’s Cocktail. This infusion is a great choice for maintenance therapy, as it consists of several vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are known for their value as nutritional supplements. Ingredients include magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C. This infusion has been found to be effective in treating migraines, fatigue, fibromyalgia, chronic sinusitis, cardiovascular disease, and more

In addition to our Myer’s Cocktail, we also offer a Supercharged Myer’s Cocktail that includes much higher doses of standard Myer’s nutrients. This IV is great for general nutritional supplementation and can be especially helpful for treating chronic illnesses.

NAD Therapy

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a naturally-occurring molecule found in every cell of the body. Research has shown that using NAD as a supplement can help with overcoming addictions, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, clients who receive NAD supplementation may be able to handle acute and chronic stress more effectively, and cope with PTSD with greater ease. New research suggests that NAD use may actually prolong life, protect DNA, slow down the aging process, and even help restore cognitive function in those suffering from neurodegenerative illness.

Vitamin C IV

Ascorbic acid (or Vitamin C) is a water-soluble vitamin required for the synthesis of collagen and neurotransmitters. This vitamin plays an important role in brain functioning and the maintenance of important structural components of blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, and bones.  In addition, vitamin C is also involved in the process of transporting fat in the body so it can be converted into energy. Vitamin C is also a highly effective antioxidant that can protect important cells from free radical damage and helps keep the immune system functioning at optimal levels.

Unlike many other mammals, human bodies do not have the capacity to produce their own vitamin C. Therefore, in order to obtain this essential vitamin, it needs to be incorporated into our diet. Alternatively, you can receive vitamin C infusions to deliver a high concentration of ascorbic acid directly into the bloodstream.
